ArticleName: The chronicles of studying Tungus-Manchu languages at the Institute of Philology SB RAS (in memory of B. V. Boldyrev) Authors: V. A. Gorbunova Institute of Philology SB RAS, Novosibirsk, Russian Federation In the section Научная жизнь
Abstract: This article outlines the formation and evolution of Tungusic-Manchu studies as a distinct research area within the Institute of Philology of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SB RAS), tracing its development from its origins to the present day. The research direction was largely defined by pioneering scholars such as V. A. Avrorin and E. P. Lebedeva. As professors at Novosibirsk State University, they equipped the first generation of humanities students with the essential skills for collecting, examining, and interpreting indigenous folklore and linguistic data. A significant group of these early graduates, including B. V. Boldyrev, L. V. Tyuryumina, L. M. Gorelova, and M. D. Simonov, advanced their careers at the Institute of History, Philology, and Philosophy SB AS USSR, contributing to the foundation of a substantial research focus. B. V. Boldyrev played a pivotal role as the head of the Tungusic-Manchu group, prioritizing lexicography and grammatical analysis based on the region's unique sociolinguistic landscape. He elucidated the primary goals of the research, namely the compilation of vocabulary and the analysis of grammar, within the framework of the prevailing regional sociolinguistics. Following this, he fostered engagement and provided training for a nascent cohort of researchers to execute these aims. Under his leadership, research expanded to include previously understudied languages such as Orok and Ulch. The article highlights the main vectors of research within this tradition and concludes that the legacy of the Novosibirsk school continues to inform the Institute’s linguistic and ethnographic work today.
