Abstract: This paper presents a novel comparative-historical study of the Turkic anthroponymy of the Siberian service Tatars, a Siberian Tatar ethnic subgroup who served within the “Irregular Troops of the Muslim Cossacks.” The analysis focuses on two early Russian sources from the 17th to19th century period: “Books of the Tsar’s Grants and Salaries. 1696” and “List of the Tobolsk Irregular Troops of the Muslim Cossack Command.” The anthroponymicon of service Tatars is investigated using an interdisciplinary approach using both historical and linguistic methods. It total, 354 male anthroponyms were analyzed, including lexemes with regional characteristics of the speech of Siberian Tatars. The operational dynamics of personal name spelling variants is revealed in relation to the codification of foreign lexeme orthographic norms within the Russian language. Over the period examined, the authors document the persistence of a Turkic foundation in the anthroponyms while noting a gradual decrease in the frequency of Turkic names and a simultaneous rise in names of Arabic and Persian origin, a phenomenon attributed to the effects of Islamic culture. Despite these trends, the name list shows the preservation of relicts of the ancient Turkic worldview. The analysis of the name list of Siberian service Tatars demonstrates that it is the adoption and practice of Islam that significantly impacted the anthroponymic landscape of the Turkic peoples of Western Siberia. Further research of the Siberian Tatar anthroponymy requires conducting a comparative analysis of their names with those of other Tatar populations and Turkic-speaking groups.
