Abstract:

The linguistic characteristics of any region are shaped by a prolonged interplay of geographical features, economic endeavors, historical developments, and sociopolitical shifts. The situation in Yakutia is notably intricate, characterized by its severe climate, diverse ethnic makeup, and prolonged, extensive intercultural interactions. This study examines the linguistic landscape of Yakutia from the 17th to the 21st century using a diachronic sociolinguistic approach. The research analyzes the evolution of the region from an indigenous multilingual space to a Yakut-dominant lingua franca zone, followed by a Soviet-era shift toward Russian, and concluding with post-Soviet identity restoration. Analyzing primary sources—including yasak (taxation) records, historical travelogues, and census data (1897–2020)—the study identifies three distinct transformational periods. From the 17th to the 19th century, the Yakut language inadvertently became the region's lingua franca through administrative practices such as the yasak system, missionary work, and merchant networks. The 20th century marked a reversal, as the landscape shifted toward Russian, transitioning from Yakut-indigenous bilingualism to a complex Yakut-Russian-indigenous trilingualism. The findings highlight that the post-Soviet period is characterized by unexpected identity reconstruction, suggesting that subjective factors play a critical role in linguistic dynamics and that language shift is not an irreversible process. The study concludes that Yakutia’s linguistic landscape cannot be explained by monocausal models. Instead, it is the product of a protracted interplay between environmental conditions, demographic shifts, administrative decisions, and subjective acts of identity construction across different temporal scales.
